Ultrasound & CT-Guided Biopsy & Drainage

A two-day, simulation-based program at ADN CoE focused on practical ultrasound and CT-guided biopsy, fluid drainage techniques, and complication decision-making in interventional radiology settings.

Training Overview

Ultrasound & CT-Guided Biopsy & Drainage Training is a focused, simulation-based educational program designed to strengthen clinical decision-making and technical proficiency in percutaneous tissue sampling and fluid management techniques. This two-day training combines core interventional radiology principles, case-based learning, and high-fidelity simulations to support safe, precise, and effective needle navigation and catheter placement in complex clinical scenarios.

The program begins with essential modules on patient selection, pre-procedural imaging review, and coagulation profile optimization. Participants review the technical nuances of ultrasound versus CT guidance, needle selection (Fine Needle Aspiration vs. Core Biopsy), and gain a structured approach to mapping safe access pathways avoiding critical neurovascular structures in daily practice.

Simulation-based sessions focus on real-time ultrasound needle tracking, CT-guided grid localization, and step-by-step drainage techniques using both Seldinger and trocar methods. Hands-on workshops cover the handling of automated biopsy guns, coaxial systems, and various drainage catheter designs for abscess, pleural, and peritoneal collections.

Advanced case discussions address challenging interventions in high-risk patients, including deep-seated retroperitoneal lesions, lung biopsies prone to pneumothorax, and dome-lesions near the diaphragm. Integrated simulations emphasize immediate complication management, such as managing a post-procedural pneumothorax, handling active hemorrhage, and recognizing vasovagal reactions during interventions.

By the end of the program, participants will be able to confidently recognize, plan, and execute image-guided biopsies and drainage procedures while preventing and managing potential procedural complications.
