ECMO & Extracorporeal Support Workshop

A two-day, simulation-based ECMO program at ADN CoE focused on mastering extracorporeal support strategies and advanced circuit troubleshooting. Designed for clinicians seeking hands-on proficiency in high-acuity ECMO management.

Training Overview

ECMO & Extracorporeal Support Workshop is a comprehensive, simulation-based training program designed for intensivists, cardiac surgeons, pulmonologists, anesthesiologists, critical care physicians, perfusionists, ICU nurses, and trainees seeking mastery in ECMO and advanced extracorporeal life support (ECLS). This two-day course integrates structured theoretical instruction with immersive, high-fidelity ECMO simulations, emphasizing rapid clinical assessment, evidence-based support strategies, and multidisciplinary decision-making for critically ill patients requiring extracorporeal intervention.

The program begins with core sessions on ECLS physiology, ECMO indications and contraindications, cannulation strategies, circuit mechanics, anticoagulation protocols, hemodynamic assessment, and early recognition of ECMO-related complications. Participants explore essential principles including veno-venous (VV) and veno-arterial (VA) ECMO pathways, oxygenator function, pump flow regulation, gas exchange management, and tailored support strategies for cardiac and respiratory failure.

Hands-on simulation modules allow participants to manage complete ECMO support scenarios using high-fidelity ECMO simulators and circuit models. Under expert supervision, attendees practice cannulation techniques, ECMO initiation and weaning protocols, pump and oxygenator troubleshooting, crisis management for circuit failure, hemodynamic optimization, anticoagulation adjustments, and stepwise response to emergency events such as hemorrhage, hypoxemia, and mechanical malfunction.

Through interactive video reviews, case-based discussions, and faculty-led debriefings, participants analyze real-world ECMO cases and refine high-stakes decision-making for patient selection, escalation of support, complication mitigation, weaning readiness, and ethical considerations in extracorporeal therapy. Structured feedback enhances clinical accuracy, team coordination, and confidence in managing ECMO-supported patients in high-acuity environments.

By the end of the program, participants will have developed the advanced procedural skills, comprehensive understanding, and clinical judgment required to confidently manage ECMO and other extracorporeal support modalities across diverse critical care settings.
