Challenging Approaches in Dialysis Catheter Procedures

A one-day, simulation-based program at ADN CoE focused on practical dialysis catheter procedures, complex venous access recanalization, and emergency decision-making in interventional radiology and nephrology settings.

Training Overview

Challenging Approaches in Dialysis Catheter Procedures Training is a focused, simulation-based educational program designed to strengthen clinical decision-making and technical proficiency in complex central venous access and advanced dialysis catheter interventions. This one-day intensive training combines venous anatomy, patient risk stratification, case-based learning, and high-fidelity simulations to support safe and effective catheter placement and salvage in patients with exhausted access options.

The program begins with essential modules on central venous anatomy, mapping of chronic venous occlusions, and multi-modality imaging interpretation (Ultrasound, Venography, and CT Venography). Participants review pre-procedural planning, patient optimization, and gain a structured approach to identifying alternative routes—such as collateral vein adaptation, femoral, translumbar, or transhepatic access—in daily practice.

Simulation-based sessions focus on advanced wire-catheter manipulation, sharp recanalization techniques for chronic total occlusions (CTO), and safe sharp-needle or snare-assisted tracking. Hands-on device workshops cover the handling of diverse tunneled and non-tunneled dialysis catheters, tunneling techniques, and the deployment of advanced access solutions like the HeRO (Hemodialysis Reliable Outflow) Graft system.

Advanced case discussions address challenging catheter revisions, fibrin sheath management (stripping vs. disruption), and procedures in high-risk patients with severe central venous stenosis or superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome. Integrated simulations emphasize crisis management for life-threatening complications, including acute air embolism mitigation, venous perforation, cardiac tamponade, and severe access-site hemorrhage.

By the end of this intensive program, participants will be able to confidently select appropriate approaches, navigate complex venous occlusions, and execute dialysis catheter procedures safely while effectively preventing and managing potential complications.
