Fellowships

Pathology & Molecular Diagnostics

Specialty Overview

Pathology & Molecular Diagnostics encompasses the morphologic, immunophenotypic and molecular evaluation of disease through histopathology, cytopathology, immunohistochemistry and modern genomic and molecular diagnostic techniques.

ADN CoE programmes are designed for physicians seeking structured exposure to contemporary diagnostic pathology and molecular medicine. Depending on the selected pathway, participants may observe laboratory and reporting workflows, engage in structured case-based learning or undertake a longer-term fellowship focused on longitudinal diagnostic, molecular and academic development.

Programmes may include exposure to surgical pathology, cytopathology, immunohistochemistry, molecular oncology, PCR-based diagnostics, fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH), next-generation sequencing (NGS), biomarker interpretation, integrated pathology reporting and multidisciplinary precision-medicine decision-making.

Clinical Observership

Observe Contemporary Pathology & Molecular Diagnostic Practice

The Pathology & Molecular Diagnostics Clinical Observership is designed for physicians who wish to observe how pathologists and molecular diagnostic teams process specimens, evaluate morphology, integrate ancillary testing and generate clinically meaningful diagnostic reports.

The programme is primarily observation-based and focuses on understanding laboratory workflows, specimen processing, microscopic evaluation, ancillary testing, molecular diagnostics, quality assurance and multidisciplinary communication.

Clinical Exposure May Include
  • Surgical pathology workflows

  • Gross specimen examination

  • Tissue processing and embedding

  • Histologic slide preparation

  • Microscopic morphology review

  • Cytopathology workflows

  • Fine-needle aspiration cytology

  • Exfoliative cytology

  • Immunohistochemistry

  • Special stains

  • Frozen-section workflows where available

  • Tumour biomarker testing

  • Molecular pathology

  • PCR-based diagnostic methods

  • FISH and related molecular techniques

  • Next-generation sequencing workflows

  • Molecular oncology panels

  • Variant interpretation pathways

  • Integrated pathology reporting

  • Multidisciplinary tumor-board participation

Educational Format

Participants observe pathology and molecular diagnostic practice under the supervision of experienced faculty and may attend appropriate sign-out sessions, microscopy reviews, molecular laboratory activities, quality meetings and multidisciplinary case conferences.

The observership does not provide independent diagnostic sign-out authority and does not replace local licensing, institutional credentialing, laboratory accreditation requirements or recognised specialist training.

Best Suited For

Physicians seeking:

  • Short-term exposure to contemporary pathology practice

  • Familiarity with laboratory and diagnostic workflows

  • Observation of histopathology and molecular testing pathways

  • Greater understanding of integrated diagnostic reporting

  • International professional development without undertaking a long-term programme

Clinical Immersion

Move Beyond Observation into Structured Diagnostic Learning

The Pathology & Molecular Diagnostics Clinical Immersion Programme provides a more intensive educational experience than a standard observership.

Participants receive structured faculty interaction, guided case review and focused diagnostic learning while remaining within the boundaries of local institutional, professional and laboratory regulations.

The programme is designed to help participants understand not only what pathologists observe, but also how morphology, immunophenotype, molecular findings and clinical information are integrated into a final diagnostic interpretation.

The Programme May Include
  • Structured histopathology case review

  • Faculty-guided microscopy sessions

  • Differential diagnosis development

  • Immunohistochemical panel selection

  • Interpretation of staining patterns

  • Cytopathology case discussions

  • Tumour classification

  • Biomarker interpretation

  • Molecular test selection

  • PCR result interpretation

  • FISH case review

  • NGS workflow discussions

  • Variant classification principles

  • Molecular oncology case integration

  • Correlation of morphology and molecular findings

  • Integrated report construction

  • Quality-control discussions

  • Multidisciplinary precision-oncology conferences

Educational Emphasis

Clinical immersion focuses on:

Observe → Examine → Interpret → Correlate → Integrate → Discuss → Apply

Participants are encouraged to analyse pathology cases, integrate morphologic and molecular findings and discuss diagnostic reasoning directly with faculty rather than functioning solely as passive observers.

Best Suited For

Physicians who want:

  • More intensive exposure than an observership

  • Structured interaction with pathology faculty

  • Case-based morphologic reasoning

  • Greater understanding of immunohistochemistry

  • Exposure to molecular diagnostic interpretation

  • Focused professional development without committing to a long-term fellowship

Clinical Fellowship

Longitudinal Training in Pathology & Molecular Diagnostics

The Pathology & Molecular Diagnostics Clinical Fellowship is the most comprehensive educational pathway within the specialty.

It is designed for physicians seeking sustained exposure to diagnostic pathology and molecular medicine and progressive development in morphologic interpretation, ancillary test selection, molecular analysis, integrated reporting and multidisciplinary diagnostic decision-making.

Unlike a short observership or clinical immersion programme, the fellowship follows a longitudinal educational model, allowing participants to encounter a broader spectrum of pathology cases and understand how diagnostic conclusions evolve through morphology, immunophenotyping and molecular correlation.

Fellowship Focus Areas May Include
  • Surgical pathology

  • Gastrointestinal pathology

  • Breast pathology

  • Thoracic pathology

  • Genitourinary pathology

  • Gynecologic pathology

  • Head & neck pathology

  • Dermatopathology exposure where available

  • Hematopathology exposure where available

  • Neuropathology exposure where available

  • Cytopathology

  • Fine-needle aspiration cytology

  • Immunohistochemistry

  • Special stains

  • Frozen-section workflows

  • Molecular pathology

  • Molecular oncology

  • PCR-based assays

  • FISH

  • Next-generation sequencing

  • Targeted gene panels

  • Biomarker testing

  • Predictive and prognostic markers

  • Variant interpretation

  • Liquid-biopsy workflows where available

  • Integrated molecular reporting

  • Quality assurance and laboratory standards

  • Multidisciplinary tumor-board correlation

Fellowship Learning Model

The fellowship may combine:

  • Longitudinal case exposure

  • Faculty-guided microscopy sessions

  • Diagnostic sign-out observation

  • Histopathology case conferences

  • Cytopathology review

  • Immunohistochemistry interpretation

  • Molecular laboratory exposure

  • NGS case review

  • Variant interpretation discussions

  • Multidisciplinary tumor boards

  • Quality assurance meetings

  • Academic reading

  • Evidence-based guideline review

  • Diagnostic reasoning exercises

  • Case presentations

  • Literature discussion

  • Reflective learning

  • Structured faculty feedback

Where permitted by the host institution and applicable regulations, additional supervised educational activities may be incorporated. The precise scope of participation is determined by the host centre, participant background, laboratory governance and local professional requirements.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the fellowship, participants should have developed a stronger ability to:
