His dedication to training the next generation of cardiovascular specialists has led him to set up and lead the Cardiovascular Training Institute at Barts Health NHS Trust, where he is also the director of training for interventional cardiology and the director of the Barts Interventional Group (BIG).

He is widely recognized as a national expert in complex angioplasty procedures, including rotational atherectomy and minimally invasive treatment of chronic total occlusions.

He travels internationally to train doctors in these techniques and has developed courses and simulator training programs for these procedures, too.

Dr Smith has been recognised with the auspicious Clinic Excellence Award multiple times, throughout his career.
